Description: We have transitioned from the "Age of Information" to the "Age of Anxiety." If news and social media upset you, there is a good reason for that. In this TEDxTalk, Schroeder describes how media and influencers build in "algorithms of outrage" to use evolutionary tendencies our ancestors used to survive against us by encouraging us to look at upsetting and outrageous content more often and thus make more money. Take a moment to recognize your created anxiety bubble and use information literacy/competence to break the cycle. Randall Schroeder is a second-generation Wartburg alum who majored in History and Journalism. Randall has been a professional librarian for over 30 years. He received his Master of Arts from the University of Iowa Library and Information Science program. He immediately started as a reference/instructional librarian at Augustana College in Illinois and later returned to Wartburg to become the Coordinator of Information Literacy Across the Curriculum program at the Robert and Sally Vogel Library. He has published and spoken widely about information literacy instruction and assessment in higher education, particularly for first-year students. His latest project in information literacy was being part of the team of librarians that wrote the report Standing Up for Truth: the role of libraries in the Mis/Disinformation Age, a WikiWisdom Forum report. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
